PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Nigerian ginger is widely recognised for its superior quality; however, the sector faces significant challenges related to food safety, inadequate infrastructure, and low productivity. In response, the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI) has launched this initiative to address these issues by:
- Enhancing food quality and safety standards.
- Providing training on market access, export strategies, and sustainability.
- Supporting SMEs in the development of value-added ginger products.
- Strengthening institutional capacity, particularly through collaboration with the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC).
Did you Know?
In 2023, a disease outbreak in Kaduna State, one of Nigeria’s key ginger-producing regions, led to a staggering 85% decline in ginger production.
This significant reduction in yield highlighted the vulnerabilities of the sector, impacting local farmers and exporters. The outbreak underscored the need for improved agricultural practices, better disease management, and support for resilience-building in Nigeria’s ginger industry.
How is this Project Achieving it’s Goals?
Improving Production and Processing Standards:
SMEs receive training on good agricultural practices, post-harvest handling, and food safety to minimise contamination risks.
Support is provided to help companies adopt modern drying and processing techniques that meet international quality standards.
Building Business Competitiveness
The project assists SMEs in developing Export Marketing Plans (EMPs) to enhance their ability to position their products effectively.
Business coaching and mentoring support are also provided to refine market strategies.
Facilitating International Exposure
SMEs are introduced to potential buyers through trade fairs and market orientation missions, fostering direct business linkages and creating opportunities for commercial expansion.
Enabling Market Access and Compliance
SMEs participate in training programmes covering export requirements, sustainability certification, and traceability systems to ensure compliance with European and other international markets.
Strengthening Institutional Support
The Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and other stakeholders receive capacity-building support, including training on consultative selling, data collection, and reporting methodologies.
This ensures a sustainable framework for ongoing sector improvement.
